Inquiry on Alopecia Areata Treatment Options

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Q:

Hello Doctor,

This is XXXX from India.
My sister is suffering from Alopecia Areata for last 11 years. We tried treating her disease with every thing we knew (Alopathy/ Homeopathy/Ayurved) but it’s of no use. May be because we didn’t have proper guidance. It will be great if you can kindly guide us how should we move forward to treat her.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
XXXX

AA treatment options, Alopecia treatment, Transplants for Alopecia, Hair Transplant and Alopecia Areata

A:

Alopeica areata (AA) is an autoimmune condition of skin.  AA usually does not need any medical intervention and the lesions improve spontaneously.  However, at times the balding spots might be very difficult to treat.  Although there is minimal evidence that injections of steroids can change the process of this disease, many physicians treat the balding AA lesions with intramural injections of long acting steroids.  Topical medications including minoxidil may also be used in some cases.  There are several current studies being conducted on the use of irritating agents to possibly change the inflammatory process of the skin.  Use of irritating agents are still not in the main stream treatments of Alopecia Areata.

Hair transplantation is definitely not one of the options at this time, because newly transplanted hair may be going through the same balding process with the same mechanism.  My best recommendation is to find a qualified dermatologist in your area and continue with him or her through future treatments.  You must be patient in circumstances such as these and try to understand that a quick recovery may not be achieved in some patients.

Itchy Scalp After Hair Transplant

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Q:

Hello! It’s been a long time.Hair Transplant effects, After Hair Transplant, Itchy scalp, Irritated scalp after hair transplant, hair transplant and itchy scalp, hair transplantation and itchy head
This is XXXX emailing you for my boyfriend.
Everything seems good. The front area is almost fall out everything, but he said the front area is really itching… so I’m just wondering, is this normal happening for growing new hair???
Also the donor area is itching some times.
Please let us know if you have chance to reply
Thank you very much and have a wonderful day!!

A:

Hi there,

Losing hair 2-3 weeks following surgery is completely normal and most people will experience it during their post-op period.

Itching may also result in the few weeks/months after a hair transplant due to the process of healing and inflammation of the skin that is related to it.  In most patients we do not need to do anything about it, but if it gets worse and unbearable, please do not hesitate to contact us so that some topical ointments (i.e.- mild steroids) can be used.

Thanks!

General FUT Hair Transplant Inquiry Response

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Q:

Dr. Mohebi,

I live outside of California and am interested in seeing you for my hair restoration. I have attached my photos to this email along with a few quick questions that I have regarding hair transplantation. Could you please check them out when you have a chance and let me know what your personal recommendations are?

- What is the approximate number of grafts required to achieve sufficient density (if not a lot) and the approximate cost of the whole process?
- How long will it take me to get back to my work and how soon I will see the results?
- Lastly, please do let me know any other important information that is relevant to the his whole procedure.

Thanks for your help!

A:

Thank you for your interest in our hair restoration services. I forwarded your information and pictures to be included in our patient system, but I also wanted to take a quick moment to review your photos and answer your questions personally. Here are the answers to your questions in the orders they are received:

Number of hair transplant grafts recommended

You are a class VI of hair loss and would require the maximum number of grafts we can get in one session to achieve the density you are striving for. The number is generally above 2500 grafts for people who have never had a surgery, but may fluctuate in the range of 2500 to 4000 grafts based on your own scalp laxity and density of hair (to be determined when you are here in our office).

What is the average hair transplant cost

The cost for hair transplants at US Hair Restoration are based on the number of grafts needed and the standard charges are as follows for Follicular Unit Transplants: $4 per graft for the first 2500 grafts and any additional grafts are charged at half price ($2 per graft).

Your travel expenses will be reimbursed towards 10% of the cost of surgery (up to $500).

In addition to reimbursement on travel, we will book a hotel near our office for you for 2 nights with free transportation between the hotel and our office for your visits.

We also have a standby program available for people who can be flexible and go on our waiting list to await the next available surgery date (visit us at www.ushairrestoration.com for more information on that offer).

How soon will I see results after a hair transplant

The procedure for a strip hair transplant takes one whole day (from 7am to 5pm) and you are required to return the day after for your procedure for a hair wash. With these basic requirements, you can fly back home as early as the first day after your surgery. You will be fully functional the first day after surgery, but you may have some swelling for 3-4 days following.

Visible results of your hair transplantation will be seen approximately 6-10 months following the procedure itself.

How can I get more hair restoration information

You can also find great information about hair transplant methods with US Hair Restoration on our website: www.ushairrestoration.com or our blog: www.ushairrestoration.com/blog

FUE Transplant from Body or Beard

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Q:

My hair loss is ruining both my life and my family’s lives. I go to the XXX school of medicine in XXX and would be flying over to get the procedure done. I wanted to see if we could discuss a large FUE treatment from my body and beard area for transplantation into the balding areas of the scalp to end my hair loss for good.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Cheers

A:

As I have previously stated before here in my blog, body hair can be considered as an alternative method for hair restoration as long as you, the patient, understands that the end result is not going to be comparable with a scalp hair transplant due to smaller final length of hair and short growth phase (Anagen) as opposed to long resting phase (Telogen) that are characteristics of body hair.  In other words, you may only see a portion of transplanted hair follicles in growth phase while the remainder stay in resting phase without maintaining a visible hair shaft.

Beard hair transplantation could also be another option, which is typically closer to scalp hair in many patients and has a longer growth phase (which is why it grows to become longer in comparison to body hair).  However, any of these options have their own pros and cons and patients should be evaluated for each treatment plan based on their needs and only after a complete evaluation by a hair transplant surgeon is performed.

Using Jacuzzi After Hair Transplan

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Q:

Hello,

My boyfriend just had a hair transplant with you two weeks ago.    It seems that everything is going perfect, but  I have two questions for you:

  • When can he start taking vitamins?Jacuzzy after hair transplant
  • Can he use the sauna (jacuzzi)???

Thanks for everything, we are very satisfied with your surgery.

Best regards,

A:

I am glad to hear that you have had a good experience with us at US Hair Restoration.

Taking vitamins after hair transplant

Vitamins can be started immediately in the first few days after a hair transplant surgery, if for any reason they were discontinued prior to the procedure.  That is also true about most other medications that patients may have had to discontinue or prolong use of before hair restoration before surgery (i.e- blood thinners like aspirin or aspirin like medications).

Using Jacuzzi after a hair transplant

As for using the jacuzzi or immersing newly transplanted hair into water, one week after a hair restoration surgery is generally a good time.  Just be sure to be careful with sun exposure for a period of six months after hair transplantation.  If you have to be exposed to direct sun exposure, you can use a hat or sun block for that period after hair restoration.
