Hiring Qualified Technicians for Hair Restoration
Q:
I need to get new staff cutter/planters trained for a clinic I have been asked to manage. The present staff are terrible and I need to get new staff without bad habits trained.
Can you help!
Louise Geary, MD
A:
Hi Dr. Geary,
Its great to hear that you are carefully selecting the right hair technicians for your practice. It is not always easy to putting together a wonder team for your office, but it is definitely necessary in order to achieve the best possible results.
The three main issues with finding the best staff for hair transplant surgeries are as follows:
1. Not every applicant has a perfect hand-eye coordination which is crucial for performing hours of continuous work under a microscope.
2. It takes an average of 6 months on the job before a new hair technician completely grasps the expectations of a surgeon and reaches a reasonable speed for cutting under the microscope and placing follicular unit grafts.
3. Some experienced technicians may have been trained incorrectly or have developed “bad habits” as you previously stated. Breaking them from these habits and creating a standard of quality is highly recommended for training the best technicians.
Here is what I did to prepare my surgical team: I put out multiple ADs in different locations and received countless applicants. We interviewed each applicant and selected only the best which we were convinced would be perfect matches for our hair restoration practice. Many of the hired technicians needed to be de-trained and re-trained with US Hair Restoration standards. Then, following their hires, we began using these technicians in our hair transplant surgeries and both the technician supervisor and myself observed them very closely until they developed consistent quality that was not needed to be constantly monitored.
We do not stop here. The quality of our technician’s work is consistently monitored and feedback is given to them at all times. They are being formally evaluated quarterly and we have monthly educational sessions for them. In these monthly meetings, we train them with the highest regarded hair restoration techniques and review the standards of care that are expected at US Hair Restoration.
I hope I have helped you adequately with your staffing question.
Good luck to you
