Evaluation of Hair Growth Change According to the Recipient Site after Hair Transplantation

This is an extract from the study presented by Dr. Hwang from Korea

There have been a few reports that transplanted hairs to the recipient's site other than scalp showed different growth characteristics from that of scalp hairs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the transplanted non-scalp hairs grow differently when transplanted to scalp, for instance, hair transplantation from axillary area to scalp.

Hair follicles were harvested from axillary area and then they were transplanted into the forehead of volunteer. The hair diameter, survival rate, growth rate and other qualities were measured at 6, and 12 months.

At 6 months post-op, the transplanted axillary hair to the forehead showed some increase in the length of the hair compare with the original axillary hair. Therefore, there is a high possibility that it will grow longer than the original hair at 12 months post-op. This needs more follow up with larger number of cases to study.
